The Battle of the Somme

Much debate has taken place on whether the Battle of the Somme was a success or failure for the Allied Forces. Some historians have focussed on the aims of the battle, some have counted the cost in lives. Others consider territorial gains and losses, morale or support from the homefront. In any assessment all these need to be analysed before a judgement is made.

Task - Students are expected to read the website material, complete a worksheet and then attempt a written response to the following:

 

How would you judge the battle of the Somme for the Allied Forces. As a success or a failure? Justify your answer.
