DID YOU KNOW?

Each year, the people of Australia send 18 million tonnes of waste to landfill - the equivalent of 1 tonne for every man, woman and child. Australians are the second highest producers of waste behind the U.S.A. On Clean Up Australia Day in 1999, 12,500 tonnes of litter was collected by volunteers.

Your advertising firm has won the contract to help fight this type of pollution!

Your task:

To research four main types of rubbish and design an advertising campaign of at least two types of media to reduce one type of waste in your community.

Points to consider:

  • what percentage of each type of waste is collected throughout Australia?
  • what are the major types of waste in each category?
  • how does this source of rubbish affect your local environment?
  • alternatives that can be used
  • recycling opportunities available in your community.

What to do:

  • Print a copy of the summary sheet for completing your research.
  • Use the following sites and resources to collect information needed.
  • Decide, as a team, which source of waste you will use in your advertising campaign
