A searchable database of file extensions with detailed descriptions and information about each file type.
3. Tech Terms Computer Dictionary (http://www.techterms.org/)
A searchable dictionary of computer terms defined in simple language with helpful examples.

MacFixIt has news on late-breaking bugs
and has a searchable data base to locate your particular bug.
MacFixIt includes links to the Macintosh Bible - a must-read for

PC-Help Online is a free service offering
PC help. Resources here include directories of Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs), tips and information and computer dictionaries.
There is also a discussion forum in which you can ask other users
for help with your technical difficulty.

support is free but you'll need Internet Explorer 5.0 to access it
(you can download it from the site).

for Windows users. If you've ever got into problems with Windows
registry this site might be your answer.

This online version of the Windows 98 book
gives a long list of different things you can do with Windows 98
and instructions on how you can tweak things around. This site is
aimed at a lower technology level than most self help sites, so
beginners should start here.

This is an excellent site with short Quicktime movies which
can be viewed online, or you can purchase the video. If you're

An amazing one-stop site with Fix-It and
How-To sections as well as a Help Guides launchpad dedicated to
just about everything - Windows, Mac, software, hardware plus
heaps of downloads to tweak up your system.
- Experts'
Exchange
Touted as "the number one knowledge-sharing
community on the Web", the Experts' Exchange has a range of topic
areas covering every subject you could point a mouse
at.
- Bug
Net
A great place to start if you're looking
for bug information. Need help fast? Turn to Fix Finder or do a
site search for immediate results. You'll find the latest bugs to
look out for in the BugNet Alert section.
- Catch-up
In the computer and internet business, it's
very easy to get out of date quickly. While many companies offer
services that will scan the web for updates, then download and
install as necessary, these tend to be subsciption-based services.
This site, on the other hand will do it all for free!
- Getright
Once you have run Catch-up, you could
easily be faced with 50-odd downloads. The chances of all 50
coming through safely without your computer crashing/disconnecting
from the internet and so on are slim, so the answer is automatic
download. This shareware program will download a list of files you
set up, automatically resume downloading if you get disconnected
and a number of other really useful things.

- Service911 ties together information and services from a
well-credentialled collection of sources.
- CNET
Help
Sometimes, extensive help, system crashes
and so on aren't what you're interested in. Tips and tricks can be
the most useful things of all. CNET has compiled a lot, with
categories ranging from Internet, hardware and operating systems
to graphics and gadgets. There's a full listing available if you
just want to browse.
- USB
Workshop
Few new computers don't come with at least
one USB plug - from iMacs to Windows based machines. The workshop
explains the ins and outs of this fast, user-friendly
plug-and-play way of hooking up external devices to your computer.
